The federal and state programs implemented by the Community Development Department include those funded by HUD, EPA, BJA, DMR and similar agencies. Programs are coordinated with all the departments of the City. Activities include homeownership
assistance, crime prevention, recreational development, and infrastructure improvements. The department strives to service area citizens through a variety of available funding options.
HUD Entitlement Grant
The annual fiscal amount of this grant is $400,000. The program begins in
October and public meetings are held in July and August. The performance
hearings for this event are held in December. The projects included in
this grant are land acquisitions, recreational development, elevation of flood prone
houses and first time homeowners assistance.
Historic Preservation Commission
This commission makes recommendations for surveys, nominates projects for
National Registry, and assists building owners with historic tax credits.
The commission meets on the second Wednesday of every month at noon in the
Community Development Conference Room located at 622 Delmas Avenue. Emergency
Shelter Grant
This grant aids local homeless shelters and is applied for annually. Mississippi
Economic Development Authority Grant
This grant aids in local economic development projects.
