FAQ - Public Works

Q. Will the city mow my vacant lot?
A. No. The city is only responsible for mowing city property. However, should your lot become an eyesore or a health hazard, the city may take matters into its own hands. In this case, the city will have it mowed and charge it to you through your property taxes.

Q. I have had a drainage problem around my house for years. I notified the city a few years ago, but it is still not fixed. What should I do?
A. Start by calling the city again. It may be that your problem was inadvertently misfiled or misplaced. It may take a little while for your problem to be corrected. Drainage, along with everything else, has to be done in order of priority. If you have any questions or comments, please call  the Public Works Department at 938-6623.

Q. My household garbage wasn’t picked up! Do I call the city?
A. The solid waste contractor is responsible for your household garbage. However, in the event that your scheduled pickup was missed, please call the Public Works Department at 938-6623.

Q. It’s pouring rain, my driveway is flooded, why can’t the city come out here and drain this water off now?
A. In cases of torrential rain or great amounts of rain in short periods of time, the drainage system becomes overloaded. Quite simply, there is nowhere for the water to go. Given an adequate amount of time without rain, the waters at the mouth of the system will begin to flow allowing the water in your driveway to dissipate.

Q. I just saw a City truck at my neighbors or down the street. Why didn’t it stop and handle my work order?
A. The city has many different trucks. They all serve a different purpose. Perhaps the truck you saw was not equipped to handle your problem.  Someone will be by to attend to your need as the time presents itself.

Q. How do I locate and redeem an animal?
A. Start by calling the Jackson County Animal Shelter at 497-6350. If your animal is picked up by the city’s Animal Control Division it will be taken there. Be sure to bring current proof of rabies shots with you when you go to redeem your animal. You will also be expected to pay all pound and board fees at that time. The shelter is located at 4400 Audubon Drive in Gautier, MS. It is approximately two (2) miles west of Singing River Mall. You will turn to the right (north) and find the shelter at the end of Audubon Drive.

Q. How do I utilize the City’s Work Order System?
