Government can be FUN!

In a democracy, the people vote to elect their representative to govern them.  Representing the needs and interest of many different people is challenging.  One of the responsibilities of government is to provide services which would be hard for you to do alone, such as build roads, schools, utility systems and storm drains.

Government cannot and should not do everything for you, but it can, with your help, provide order and services that are vital to a community.  The true strength of a democratic government is the realization that you have a voice, an ownership and a responsibility as a citizen, a student, a worker  and a voter.

HOW CAN A KID GET INVOLVED?

It takes more than voting to become involved.   You can become involved in local government even though you do not vote yet.

Attend a City Council meeting.
The City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 603 Watts Avenue.

At many of the City Council meetings citizens share information with local government officials to help them make fair and informed decisions for our city.  If there is something that you think needs their attention, the Council meetings are the perfect place for letting them know. Contact the City Manager's office (938-6614) at least a week ahead of time to get on the agenda.  They will be more than happy to hear your views.

Read the local newspaper each day and look for articles about your city.
Visit a City Council or Planning Board public meeting.  When your city has elections, visit the polling place where people vote.
Write a letter to the Mayor about an issue that is important to you.
Take a tour of the Council Chambers and City Hall.
Volunteer or participate in a community project.
Participate in student government at your school.

Who represents the kids?

The City Council is elected by the people who live in our city.  Once elected, the Council represents everyone who lives in our city.  The City Council oversees the government of our city, makes laws, decides where and how to spend money, establishes policies for growth, and ensures that the services we need are provided.

The City Council must make sure that their decisions benefit the people living here in Pascagoula, even the kids!

Remember....
the more you learn about government and your community the better you will be able to represent  Pascagoula someday  when you want to become the next Mayor or City Council Member.
