Singing River Hospital
System (SRHS) was established in 1931. Singing River Hospital (SRH) moved to
its present Pascagoula location in 1959, and Ocean Springs Hospital (OSH)
opened in 1968.
- In
1966, Singing River Hospital System opened the first 24-hour physician staffed
Emergency Department in Mississippi, and one of the first six in the country.
- SRH
has 403 beds and OSH 138, making the Hospital System one of the largest in the
state. With approximately 2,200 employees, SRHS is one of the largest
employers in Jackson County.
- SRHS
includes the 18,000 sq. ft. Regional Cancer Center dedicated to radiation and
medical oncology; a comprehensive heart program, comprised of a full
Cardiovascular Care Unit, three Cath Labs, and Cardiopulmonary Rehab programs;
five Intensive Care Units; two 24-hour Emergency Departments; ten LDRPs; two
fixed MRIs; one mobile Open MRI; a Subacute Nursing Unit; Diabetes Wellness
Center; Congestive Heart Failure Clinic; Wound Management Clinic; and Hospice
of Light, a service to provide in-home care for terminally ill patients.
- The
combined Medical Staffs of OSH and SRH number over 200 highly qualified
physicians. Every major specialty is represented and many of the physicians
practice at both hospitals.
- SRHS
has long been a leader in bringing health care technology to the Mississippi
Gulf Coast area by being the first to provide a Neurosurgical Intensive Care
Unit; a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system; a color Echocardiography
Unit; and one of the first Renal Lithotripsy Units.
- The
Outpatient Service Areas at OSH & SRH provide patient-convenient, state of the
art facilities to the Gulf Coast. Included are Radiology, Medical Laboratory,
Respiratory Therapy/EKG, Rehabilitation Services, Outpatient Surgery, and
Endoscopy, all easily accessible to the public.
- SRHS
began operation of a Patient Transportation Program in September of 1995 to
assist the elderly and handicapped with access to non-emergency medical and
hospital services in Jackson County.
- In
September 2002, SRH, OSH and Hospice of Light achieved accreditation once
again from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
(JCAHO) as a result of their compliance with the Joint Commission’s nationally
recognized health care standards. The two hospitals and Hospice have been
accredited every time they have been surveyed since the Joint Commission’s
founding in 1951.
- OSH
and SRH have been cited as one of the Top 100 Orthopedic Hospitals in the
Nation by the HCIA-Sachs Institute and Human Motion Institute.
- SRH
is the only hospital on the Gulf Coast, and one of only five in the state, to
carry a Level II Trauma Center designation from the Mississippi State
Department of Health, with OSH designated a Level III.
- OSH
and SRH have been cited as the “Best Overall” hospitals, and the “Most
Preferred” hospitals for heart, cancer and maternity services, according to a
1999 health care consumer study of residents of Jackson County and surrounding
areas conducted by National Research Corporation, Lincoln, Nebraska.
