Sanitary Sewer Division

The Sanitary Sewer Division of Public Works is located at 4011 14th Street. This division's goal is to maintain existing sewer lines, lift stations, and to upgrade and/or replace any inferior lines or machinery. It keeps a constant check on all 33 lift stations within the city to ensure that they are operating effectively.

When you have finished using the water within your home, it goes down the drain and becomes wastewater. This wastewater must be disposed of in some fashion. This is the main concern of your Sewer Division. When water leaves your home it drains into a main line. This line is called a gravity line. The wastewater flows down the line by the force of gravity until it reaches a lift station where pumps lift the wastewater from the bottom of a large collection tank located underground. The pumps then discharge into another shallower line that is only a few feet deep. The wastewater again travels by gravity until it reaches another lift station. This process will continue until the wastewater reaches the Sewer Treatment Plant located at Front and Frederic Streets. This plant is operated by The Gulf Coast Regional Wastewater Authority.

The city crews of the Sewer Division are responsible for the maintenance of all sewer mains and service lines up to the homeowner's property line. Any lines past the property line are the responsibility of the homeowner. However, there may be times when your wastewater is not draining correctly. This could be caused by many things including a stoppage in the sewer main. Please call the Public Works Department if you think you have a sewer backup. The city crews can then come out and investigate the cause of the problem.

Since there is no meter to determine wastewater usage, your sewer rate for billing purposes is determined by a percentage of your total water use. Again, if you have any questions concerning your sewer lines call Public Works at 938-6257 during normal working hours or visit our frequently asked questions page.
