1. Should I have a fire extinguisher in my home?

Fire extinguishers are not required in a residence, but are highly recommended. If you have an extinguisher, it should be placed where it is easily accessible, on the wall. There is no mandate for servicing fire extinguishers in single family home.

2. How can I get my fire extinguisher serviced?

Call your local fire protection service company to arrange necessary inspections.

3. What can i expect when the fire department conducts a fire inspection in my place of business?

The fire department conducts fire and life safety occupancy inspections in each business within the city on an annual basis. Areas that are inspected include those in which the general public has access. Items such as panic hardware, smoke detectors, fire alarms, automatic fire sprinkler systems, and portable fire extinguishers are inspected to ensure operational readiness.

4. What do firefighters do when they are not responding to calls?

Training takes up a good deal of time. Firefighters are required to complete a certain amount of hours per month. Firefighters also perform CPR training, station tours, and fire prevention events. They must check and maintain all equipment apparatus' and cleaning the stations on a weekly basis.

5. What information should I provide when reporting a 9-1-1 emergency?

When reporting a 9-1-1 emergency, be prepared to provide the exact location of the emergency, what is involved (auto, home, vegetation, etc.), number of persons involved, your location, and a phone number you are calling from so that you can contacted if you become disconnected.

6. Where can I get first aid classes or CPR training?

Call your local American Red Cross office.

7. What is the best thing to do for a burn?

Cool a burn with water. Do not use ointments, butter or other substances. For minor burns contact a physician. For serious burns call 911 immediately.

8. When I call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency, why does an engine arrive in addition to an ambulance?

The fire department serves as the first responders for all medical emergencies. Our three fire stations are strategically placed throughout Pascagoula so our response times have a positive effect on medical emergencies. In addition to the ambulance service, our firefighters are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). It is also important to remember that with any medical emergency, extra hands are always better.

9. When responding to a call in the middle of the night do firefighters have to have to use the sirens, even with minimal traffic?

Yes. The state vehicle code requires that all responding emergency response vehicles must have all emergency lights and sirens sounding.

10. How long does it take a fire engine to get to a fire or medical emergency after 9-1-1 has been contacted?

It takes 3-5 minutes for engines to arrive on scene.

11. How do i schedule station tours or appearances for events?

12. Why do i have to call 9-1-1? Can i just call the fire station direct and save time?

The 9-1-1 system is designed to save valuable seconds. When you dial 9-1-1, the system routes the police or fire unit that is closest to your home or incident. This prevents wasting response time.

13. Do I need a fire extinguisher in a commercial building?

Yes. All occupants should have access to an extinguisher with a 75 ft. radius.

14. How do i make sure my smoke detector works?

Make sure you change the battery in your smoke detector once a year. In the meantime, press the button on your smoke detector to make sure it works at least once a month. If at any time your smoke detector begins to "chirp" consistently this is a signal that your smoke detector battery needs to be changed.

15. Where are smoke detectors required in my home?

In residential dwellings, smoke alarms shall be installed in the following locations:

- 1. On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms.
- 2. In each room used for sleeping purposes.
- 3. In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. [Call the Fire Department at (714) 288-2500 for information regarding split levels.]

16. Are we allowed to pop fireworks within city limits?

It should be unlawful to sell, possess, use or to ignite or discharge fireworks of any type within the corporate limits of the city. ( Code 1967, 12-38)

17. How do I apply for a burn permit?

The City of Pascagoula requires residents to get an open burn permit. You can get these at the Central Fire Station, located at 1707 Jackson Ave. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 8 AM to 5 PM.
